Traditional Singaporean Breakfast - Kaya Toast and Soft-Boiled Eggs
The most popular breakfast meal in Singapore is kaya toast, two soft-boiled (half-boiled) eggs drizzled with dark soy sauce
and a good strong cup of kopi (coffee). Kaya is a spread of eggs, sugar and coconut milk and flavored with pandan on toasted or fresh bread.
It is delicious, and it is everywhere.
How to do with this traditional breakfast ?
The coffee shop people will bring to you one hot-water jug with eggs inside, do not open the jug-cover immeidately.
Wait for 10 mins for the eggs to become "fully" half-boilded or half-cooked,
, then open the jug-cover to take out eggs and crack it on the tray, eat it with black soya sauce and pepper .
Besides half-boiled eggs, the coffee shop people will bring you 2 toasts pasted with butter and "kaya" (sweet coconut paste)
and a cup of hot drinks of your choice.
Where to get it ?
We recommend 24-hour "Chang Jiang G1" Coffee Shop, just 15 m from Blanc Inn.
Direction: Go out from Blanc Inn main door, Turn-Left into Beatty Lane. Walk along Betty Lane for 15m, the coffee shop is
at a corner, after a Tibetian Temple, and the shop is undernealth Hotel-81.
Price: the price is $2.40 to $2.60, depending on what kind of hot drinks you order. "Coffee-set" will be $2.50 when "Coffee-O set
will be $2.40 .
How to place order ?
1/ If you want to drink coffee with milk, say "Coffee Set". The "set" is understood to be the traditional breakfast set, as per the picture.
2/ If you want to drink coffee with no milk, say "Coffee-O Set".
3/ If you want to drink tea with milk, say "Teh Set".
4/ If you want to drink tea with no milk, say "Teh-O Set".
Hints:
1/ The Coffee frangrant smell very nice in this coffee shop. The coffee drink is hand-made brewed, it is anytime much better than ready-made
3-in-1 coffee bags or machine-brewed coffee.
2/ There are other food stalls at this coffee shop. If the traditional breakfast is not enough to fill up your
stomach, you could order few other Asian food in the shop too.
3/ In the evening, it has a very good THAI spicy food. You could have an authetic Thai feast here, and you could tell
the food stall operator to have your food less spicy if you want.
